Another film that benefited tremendously from the efforts of its leading lady was Omung Kumar’s Mary Kom, which was essentially a Priyanka Chopra show. Her physical efforts in learning boxing and building muscle were astounding, but her grace and reserve in performing was much more so. She portrayed a mother and a boxer in the film. Only because PC was in excellent form throughout this film did her character appear so authentic.
Priyanka was first sceptical as well. She liked the script, but when I got home after the narration, she called and asked, ‘Do you think I can do that?’ If anyone can do it, it’s only you and no one else, I said. My only option was Priyanka.”
Why do we use it?
“Yes, many are wondering why I didn’t cast a North Eastern female that looks like Mary Kom,” he continued. But who cares if Priyanka isn’t from Manipur? I’m not referring to a Manipuri individual. I’m referring to an Indian girl who serves as a role model for a number of people. You won’t be able to stop thinking about it once you’ve seen it. Also, why can’t Priyanka portray Mary Kom if Ben Kingsley can play Gandhi?”
